2009 Misahualli, Ecuador Trip Update

This year’s trip to Ecuador was as spiritual as any I have been a part of. Our ministry areas were Vacation Bible School and a reading glass clinic. There were nine members on our team, so there was a great opportunity to get to know those we were serving and each other. The team age was varied too, from eight years old to 70 plus, which was a huge blessing. Kate Foster was our the eight-year-old, and she was able to connect with the children very well. That, coupled with the great leadership of Mary Winkler and Patti Northcutt and the energy of Caroline Dulaney and Emily Christopher, made for exciting VBS program.

We were able to visit two villages by canoe, two by bus and one in the town we were staying in by foot. We visited with friends that we made last year, including Diana. Diana is a young girl who excepted Christ last year. We also made many new friends, like Rosa who professed her faith in Jesus Christ after our second day of VBS in her village. We also had the privilege of working with Pastor David, his wife Sandra, their son Judd and daughter Zoar. This precious young family returned from seminary in Cuba last year where both David and Sandra graduated. They have been in Misahaulli since last July. We found out later in the trip that we were the first team that they had ever hosted. They were very uplifted by the support and encouragement that our team was able to provide. We look forward to keeping up with them via email and visiting them again next year.

The second part of our team was the reading glass clinic led by Jim Worthington and Lynn Bell. Together with the help of Sandra, they were able to dispense hundreds of reading and sunglasses. They described the huge blessing of watching someone read a book or thread a needle for the first time in years. But the bigger blessing was being able to teach Sandra how to test and dispense reading glasses so that she can carry on this ministry year round. Lynn also arranged to leave the leftover glasses and have the ones that were dispensed replaced. What a wonderful example of discipleship! -AUMC Mission Director Keith Foster
